The lens in our eye isn't made out of glass, but soft tissue. Over many years some of the proteins inside of this soft lens can clump together and cause a foggy image. Cataracts surgery is the process of replacing the lens in the eye with an artificial lens that is clear and restores the eye's ability to focus light at the back of your eye.
Glaucoma becomes more common the older you get, and affects the optic nerve directly. An increase of pressure within the eye caused by increased fluid retention can cause permanent damage to your optic nerve.
Glaucoma can manifest itself with blind spots in your peripheral vision, or tunnel vision. In rarer cases it can cause painful headaches.
Because glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss, it is important to have regular checkups as we age.
